Estimation
This topic is probably the top zero most polarising topic in the agile space. Do you or do you not. What do you use?
This conversation came in from my day job of a colleague saying ‘all tasks should be estimated in hours’.
For me it boils down to the core.
Finishing an item. Moving it from the TO DO to DONE. Let’s try this with 2 tickets on a board.
A flow:
- Are they both taking effort?
- Are they both taking the same type of effort?
- What types?
- Analytical, time based, real heavy bulky lifting, different types of effort
- Have you done it before?
Just by going through the above it is hard to apply hours for everything above. Something that is more mentally taxing can not be equated as easily as something that is just arduous.
Sure you could say or estimate they both take 2 hours to do but it doesn’t really speak to the complexity for ALL items.
Now I’m not writing this to say if you either should or should not estimate. This varies from team to team, product to product or even situation.
Every tool or even hammer has it’s place but to claim every thing you hit is a nail is a fallacy.
