The Stress Cycle
Stress is a funny component. It is sometimes necessary and as much a part of improvement and performance as the day is to the night.
Mental stress leads to habit behaviour and not goal orientated behaviour
A famous quote from Neuroscience for Coaches. It is sometimes comparable to drowning in a sea of worries, doubt and future expectation.
When on the path to bettering yourself it is key to realise and mental check your habits, especially when you have a goal you are chasing.
Stress and it’s followers have a unique way of suppressing mental function and promoting previous learned behaviours.
What does this mean for you today?
- Situations where you practice a new response vs an old one, you may regress to the old
- In stressful situations memory sometimes ‘leaves’ you and you move/react on autopilot
- Learning new information whilst under a considerable amount of stress is less likely to be retained
Now
You’re probably thinking, it’s inevitable, I live in a stressful time, place I will not get out of this hole. Humans have a fascinating strength to persevere, adapt and evolve.
In times of high stress you can use tools like:-
- Mindfulness
- Self-talk (in the situation)
- Long deep breaths
- Examining your belief systems (when A happens, I do B, then C is the result)
- Examine the triggers
Adapting to stressful situations and growing through them is the goal. This is truly learning one’s self.
